I think that the often quoted statistic of 55 million blogs is accurate, but completely misleading at the same time.
Most bloggers are 'private bloggers', writing content for themselves and a small circle of friends. They might put up some adsense on their site, but they are not really interested in making money.
It would be interesting to get some statistics on how many 'professional' blogs there are out there.
